The Burradon Stakes will open the card at Newcastle on Good Friday and I fully expect Andab to go off a warm favourite on the day. The current 5/2 available looks too big, and with just six rivals taking him on I would be disappointed to see him beaten.
A full-brother to Group 1 winning Juvenile Victoria Road, he showed out in Qatar that he retains plenty of his ability, not getting the cleanest of passages but staying on grittily – a trait he has shown previously when chasing home the likes of Albert Einstein and Gstaad. His dam, Tickled Pink, was dual Group 3 winning sprinter, so there is a small question mark about getting this stiff mile. However, he wasn’t stopping at the line in Doha, and his sire, Saxon Warrior, does look to provide stamina in the pedigree.
One of three still currently holding Group 1 entries (Billecart & Timeforshowcasing are the other two), he was likely taken out of the 2000 Guineas after being gelded over the winter and will not be able to take up the alternative engagement in the Irish 2000 Guineas for that same reason. With that in mind, connections will be looking to capitalise where they can, and where the prize money is good, so this looks a solid opportunity.
Andab will have to defy a 3lb penalty here, and will be giving 8lb away to a pair of fillies’ that are better off at the weights on official ratings, but I think he is better than his rating and some of that weight given can be negated with a run already under his belt. Further to that, he also has the benefit of having Champion All Weather jockey Billy Loughnane in the saddle.
